Kyaww-catar

Kyaww-catar, the northernmost province of the Nikosian Empire, is a largely mountainous region, mostly populated by crag felines.

Geography

Kyaww-catar is informally divided into 'highlands' and 'lowlands', on the north and south, respectively, with the capital of Kyaww-ruiaa situated approximately on the border between the two sub-regions.

History

The first people to appear in Kyaww-catar were the Kyaww-fel, the ancestors of modern day crag felines, who were steppe nomads who wandered between the Kyaww-catar lowlands and the Zauana flatlands. However, the first permanent settlers in the region were the People of Loup, before they were driven north by Kyaww-fel looking to carve out settling space of their own after clashing with the fledgling regal feline kingdoms in the south.

It is notably the only province of the Nikosian Empire that was never ruled by the Leograu Empire. It was, however, annexed into the Nikosian Empire in 7951 DC following the Whitescarf Wars.

Demographics

The vast majority of the modern day inhabitants of Kyaww-catar are crag felines, but with significant minorities of frost and gray Fenrans.

The province is generally very scarcely populated - Kyaww-ruiaa has a population of 770,000, with about half that scattered all over the region in hundreds of smaller towns and villages.

Military

With the rise of the former vassal nation Nethron as a significant military power, Kyaww-catar has been increasingly important to the Nikosian Empire as a buffer zone, and as such, the Kyaww-catar Mountain Corps, the provincial armed service branch, receives over double the military funding of Darkfallow, the province with the second largest military budget. The border between Kyaww-catar and Nethron is an artiller-scarred no-man's-land that is dotted wiht fortresses and walls on both sides. As of 10110 DC, both sides have agreed upon an indefinite ceasefire, though negotiations so far have yielded no results.
