Democratic Republic of Moonfell

The Democratic Republic of Moonfell, informally Moonfell or D.R.M., is a small country situated within a series of valleys within the Dark Barrier Mountains in Dunieth. It is bordered on the north by the Darkfallow Province of the Nikosian Empire, to the south-west by the Ka'aras Sovereignty, and to the south-east by the Underdeep Blightlands. By area, it the smallest fully-recognized sovereign state in Dunieth.

History

The Moon Shard

In the mid Draconic Era, a shard of the moon of Zairis was spotted falling to the ground over Dunieth. The black dragon Rūmarion, who tracked the trajectory of its fall, predicted its eventual location accordingly and sent his dracon minions to establish a settlement in order to secure control of this moon shard for its study and potential exploitation. The shard would eventually make contact with the ground at the location Rūmarion had predicted and buried itself deep underground at impact. The valleys surrounding the impact site were fortified and excavation of the shard commenced and persisted for 30 years. The process of excavating the impact site was a long and tortorous process for the valley's population, which had manifested into deep resentment of Rūmarion among his minions, as even after the recovery of the shard and its subsequent delivery to Rūmarion, its transformative effect on the surrounding rock layers along its impact path had been discovered, and as such, the workers were immediately put to work extracting as much of the newly discovered mineral mondium as possible.

The Blight and Rūmarion's demise

A few hundred years later, the extraction of mondium was still in full swing as the mass blighting event happened to the south-east, creating the Underdeep Blightlands. Malcontents among Rūmarion's minions took notice of this and some escapees made it over and returned some time later with the news of the Blight. This resulted in a spread of Demonology among the malcontents, which eventually resulted in the slaying of Rūmarion by the combined forces of dracon rebels and their summoned demons.

Prosperity District disaster

In 10055, Savior's Rest was rocked by tragedy as a failure of a containment unit for the toxic gas byproduct of the mondium refinement process caused the engulfment of around 80% of the Prosperity District in said gas, resulting in 800 fatalities and 1700 hospitalizations, of which about 55% have since suffered chronic health issues. As a direct response, the People's Assembly voted in stricter regulations on the handling and disposal of mondium refinement byproducts.

Economy

Moonfell's economy remains, even millennia after its initial discovery, heavily dependent on the extraction and export of mondium ore. Much like the oil industry of its neighbor, the Ka'aras Sovereignty, its mining industry is fully state-owned and operated, but unlike the Sovereignty's sovereign wealth fund, the state's revenue from Moonfell's ore exports is mostly distributed directly to all its citizens as a form of universal basic income.
