Alchemy

The fringe discipline of Alchemy is the study and application of interactions of chemicals with Aura. In common parlance, the term is also applied to professional potion makers, as potionmaking also falls under the purview of alchemy.

History

Alchemy is considered the second oldest fringe discipline, after divine invocations, and has its roots in attempts by Aura users of hunter-gatherer societies to improve the quality of foraged food and drink in some way, such as by purifying water and improving the nutritional benefits of food items.

The first known mention of the terms 'alchemy' and 'alchemist' comes from a manuscript found in the runes of a long-abandoned fortress in the Ascuphre Mountains dating from the Pre-Draconic Era, describing the duties of a potion master.

Tools

Alchemists tend to hybridize their toolkits between those found in a magician's arcane laboratory and a chemist's scientific laboratory. As such, one might find a wide variety of tools associated with the two, including auratic foci, sigil mats, chemical stills, laboratory grade glass ware, safety goggles, etc.

Specializations

By far the best known service alchemists provide is the synthesis of potions. Lesser known is the sub-discipline of Auraforging, a process that creates auratically imbued alloy variants such as alchemical steel.
